Hip & Knee
Towards the end of 1986 the Nuffield Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery and the Medical Director of the
Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre perceived the increasing demand for revision surgery
of failing hip replacements. They also realised the need for increasing specialisation within orthopaedics and
obtained approval for the creation of a new consultant post at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre to work solely
in the field of hip and knee arthritis and revision surgery; a visionary and, at that time, unique concept.
Peter McLardy-Smith was appointed to the post early in 1987. A few years later a further new post was
created in hip and knee surgery and Chris Dodd was appointed to develop the knee arthroscopy service within the Nuffield
Orthopaedic Centre. As Peter and Chris were old friends and colleagues, it was natural that
they should team up within the hospital structure. Clinical demand in the field grew rapidly and, as greater capacity was needed, Oxford Orthopaedics was formed.
At Oxford Orthopaedics, we are now twelve friends and colleagues working solely in the field of adult hip
and knee surgery based at the Nuffield
Orthopaedic Centre, the musculoskeletal teaching hospital for the University of Oxford and a world renowned
centre for postgraduate teaching and research.
From the earliest years we have also practiced together as a group in the private sector; between us we
cover every aspect of hip and knee surgery from minor injuries to massive reconstructions. We have weekly
meetings to discuss clinical cases and can thus bring a vast experience and
expertise to any clinical problem. Specialisation within orthopaedics is no longer unique, but we believe that
this group is - working together as a team, both in the setting of an NHS teaching hospital and the private
sector. We are proud to be part of that team.
